Immunization Requirement

According to Massachusetts State law, no student, as specified in 105 CMR 220.400(C) and 220.600(B), shall attend a postsecondary institution without a certification of immunization, as specified in 105 CMR 220.600(C).

For purposes of 105 CMR 220.600, “postsecondary institution” shall mean a college, university, institute or school accredited as a postsecondary institution by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

As you enter your chosen profession, one of the most important roles that you have is to care for your patients as well as yourself. On the subsequent pages and forms, you will find the IHP policies related to immunization history and other clinical participation requirements.

Thank you for understanding that these policies are in place to protect you as a student from unnecessary exposure to potentially life-threatening diseases and conditions, as well as to protect the patients we serve.

New Students

For new students, below is a quick checklist of your immunization requirements that you should provide documentation to File MD at least a month before the first day of classes:

  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  • Chickenpox (Varicella)
  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria, and Pertussis)
  • Hep B, 3 shots (Hepatitis B, completed series)
  • Tb (Tuberculosis skin test)
  • Flu (Influenza Vaccine)
  • Yearly Physical Exam
  • CPR (For health care professionals)

Currently Enrolled Students

For currently enrolled students (matriculated prior to September 2011), the only change is that the IHP is now requiring that your Hepatitis B series be completed PRIOR to matriculation. There has been sufficient time between your matriculation dates (prior to January 2011) and now for you to have completed the Hepatitis B series and provided documentation to FileMD.

Also new is the requirement to have a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) within the past 10 years, not just a Td (Tetanus and Diptheria). If you do not have a Tdap on file with FileMD, please make an appointment with your primary care provider to ensure that you can provide documentation to FileMD BEFORE August 7 that you have received a Tdap within the past 10 years.

All Students

All students need to provide annually:

  • Tb (Tuberculosis skin test) BEFORE EXPIRATION
  • Flu (Influenza Vaccine) BY NOVEMBER 15

ALL students need to provide BEFORE Expiration

  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) EVERY 10 YEARS
  • CPR (For health care professionals) EVERY TWO YEARS

To request copies of your immunization records once they have been submitted to file MD, download the College Student Authorization form and follow the instructions on the form.

Do not contact the IHP directly. If you have any questions or concerns about your immunization history or documentation, please contact File MD directly at:
