Appendix A: HE-999 Course Waivers

This waiver process is required for your studies with collaborators (Harvard Macy Institute (HMI) and Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) to be recognized here at the Institute. The program faculty will work with you toward successful completion.

The waiver process requires you to create an archive of work products which will provide supporting evidence your successful meeting of course objectives for each course that you are planning to waive. These work products include items that you have already created during your studies with one or more of our collaborators.  You will be asked to submit these into a new space in D2L, which has been designed specifically for this purpose.  The waiver process requires a portfolio fee will be applied to your student accounts in the upcoming term. The fee is fixed regardless of the number of courses you are waiving and is only assessed once regardless of when you have completed or will complete the studies with our collaborators.

Most of the required items already exist from your studies with our collaborators; there are additional items, such as narratives and reflections that you will need to prepare in some situations. The specific due dates for submissions will be provided in August for studies completed before matriculating in the MS program. Submissions related to studies completed during the MS program will have deadlines within 60 days after completion of those studies. Your transcript in iOnline will reflect the waiver of the IHP courses after the submissions have been reviewed by HPEd faculty. A summary of the specific steps is shown below:

1. MS Scholars are enrolled in this D2L space, once identified through the existence of collaborator courses on their Programs of Study (POS).  A fee will be assessed to the student account.

2. The Scholar identifies the courses that (s)he wishes to have waived.

3. The Scholar submits the appropriate items, such as certificates, worksheets, narratives, and reflections by due date.

4. The faculty members responsible for portfolio reviews for the various course evaluate the submissions.

5. Scholar is notified of status, and course is listed in iOnline as "Exempt".

If you are taking courses only with MGHIHP, you do not have to submit anything or pay a portfolio fee.
